Who would have dared to dream three weeks ago that after 21 hard stages and epic battles of the Spanish La Vuelta two Slovenians will stand on the podium. Tadej Pogačar, the youngest cyclist in the race, won three stages – not just any stages, but the toughest mountain stages – and put on the white jersey as the best young cyclist. In the general ranking only the oldest and most experienced in the caravan Alejandro Valverde and the winner Primož Roglič came before him. Today Madrid is Slovenian. The Slovenian national anthem “Zdravljica” was played to honour our two matadors, Slovenian flags were waved and the sweetest “Pogača” (flat cake) and “Rogljiček” (crescent-shaped rolls) in today’s cycling world are eaten.
But – pictures say more than a thousand words.
